{"id":5810,"date":"2024-10-07T15:26:12","date_gmt":"2024-10-07T14:26:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cosmos.isd.kcl.ac.uk\/?p=5810"},"modified":"2024-11-12T20:30:05","modified_gmt":"2024-11-12T20:30:05","slug":"phd-studentship-in-computational-science-for-music-heart-theranostics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cosmos.isd.kcl.ac.uk\/?p=5810","title":{"rendered":"PhD Studentship in Computational Science for Music Heart Theranostics"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"has-black-color has-text-color has-link-color wp-elements-32e30c5b07433f738d829a4ac20b23bb\">The <strong>Music Theranostics Laboratory<\/strong> has a PhD opportunity for research at the intersection of music science, data science, and cardiovascular science.&nbsp; The Lab, joint between the School of Biomedical Engineering and Imaging Sciences and Department of Engineering, focuses on digital music-based research in cardiovascular therapeutics and precision diagnostics. The Lab, to be in St Thomas\u2019 Hospital, is equipped with a reproducing piano for designing and rendering music-based interventions and with a range of sensors for capturing and recording concurrent cardiovascular parameters for music and heart research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the number one cause of mortality worldwide. Increasing life expectancy and improved acute cardiovascular interventions mean that the number of patients with chronic CVD are increasing. The autonomic nervous system (ANS) plays a central role in regulating heart function and autonomic dysfunction has been linked to cardiovascular conditions Therefore autonomic modulation represents an attractive option for intervention to treat CVD. Music presents a non-invasive, non-pharmacological, and pleasurable way to modulate the ANS which may contribute to both diagnosis and treatment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This project will focus on developing novel techniques to characterise and predict individual autonomic responses to music structures during music engagement. The research will involve (i) designing mathematical models of physiological parameters and musical structures, (ii) developing methods for inferring their causal relationships, (iii) computational implementation of algorithms, (iv) data collection and preparation, and (v) evaluation of algorithms\u2019 effectiveness in the data collected. The project will focus on western classical music and study both healthy volunteers &amp; young supraventricular tachycardia patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PhD will be supervised by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/people\/elaine-chew\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Elaine Chew<\/a><\/strong>, Professor of Engineering in the Department of Engineering and School of Biomedical Engineering &amp; Imaging Sciences (BMEIS). The second supervisor is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcl.ac.uk\/people\/john-whitaker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">John Whitaker<\/a><\/strong>, Senior Lecturer in BMEIS and Honorary Consultant in Cardiology, Electrophysiology and Devices at Guy&#8217;s and St Thomas&#8217; NHS Foundation Trust.
