Here is Mateusz&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/mateusz-soli%C5%84ski-722508a0_id-like-to-share-the-most-important-article-activity-7427765925422174208-o_0l?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAAAo1u0Bw-bD77JUiD1qIq7VfZ5nX6rdxPQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">LinkedIn post<\/a> about the article:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;d like to share the most important article I wrote during my last postdoc at King&#8217;s College London,\u00a0under the COSMOS project led by Elaine Chew.\u00a0It&#8217;s finally been\u00a0published in the European Heart Journal &#8211; Imaging Methods and Practice! \ud83d\ude80<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-white-color has-alpha-channel-opacity has-white-background-color has-background\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>In that study,<\/strong> we analysed associations between mutual changes in physiological \ud83e\udec0 and music \ud83c\udfb6 signals during music listening \ud83d\udc42. Rather than comparing simple \u201cbefore vs. during\u201d averages, we focused on change points in the music\u2014including shifts in loudness, tempo, harmonic tension \u2014 and on manually annotated compound events, such as the emergence of a new melody, standout articulation, or harmonic release. (including new melody occurrence, standout articulation, harmonic release and others).<br><br><strong>What we found:<br><\/strong>&#8211; In the general population, the emergence\u00a0of a novel melody \ud83c\udfbc and increase in tempo \u2b06\ufe0f were associated with an increased respiratory rate \u2b06\ufe0f \ud83e\udec1 ,<br>&#8211; an increase in loudness \u2b06\ufe0f and other acoustic features were associated with an increase in HR\u2b06\ufe0f and a reduction in heart rate variability metric \u2b07\ufe0f,<br>&#8211; When we stratified listeners by baseline autonomic nervous system (ANS) state, we observed markedly different response patterns:<br>a) Individuals with higher parasympathetic tone showed amplified parasympathetic responses to musical change points.<br>b) Individuals with higher sympathetic tone exhibited further sympathetic activation.<br><br><strong>What does it mean?<br><\/strong>&#8211; The way what was our physiological state before listening is associated with our response to music &#8211; this important observation moves us closer to creating safe and individually tailored music-based tools for clinical and everyday use.<br>&#8211; Moments of musical novelty \u2014 when something unexpected happens \u2014 play a central role in shaping bodily responses.<br><br><strong>And the last conclusion: <\/strong>classical music \u2260 relaxing music (in most cases). There is a stereotype (sometimes repeated in the literature) that classical music is only meant to relax us. In this study and throughout my postdoc, we sought to communicate that expressive classical music has a rather engaging effect and might induce something like positive stress (eustress).
