In 1999, the first ever Diderot Mathematical Forum on Mathematics and Music took place across three countries, Lisbon, Paris, and Vienna. The conference culminated in a Springer volume on Mathematics and Music edited by G. Assayag, H. G. Feichtinger, and J. F. Rodrigues.
Led by Gérard Assayag, Head of the Music Representations Team and an instigator of the original event, we will be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Diderot Forum in a National University of Singapore Institute for Mathematical Sciences workshop.

Overview
MES 21 will bring together researchers from around the world to celebrate the 20-year anniversary of the milestone « Diderot Mathematical Forum : Mathematics and Music » in order to probe the achievements of the Mathemusical Studies as it has contributed to the launch of, and to assess through lectures and discussions the extent and the fecundity of the progress made in, the mathematics and music community.
Mathemusical studies encompass a bi-directional movement, from musical questions to mathematical formalisation, and from mathematical theories to musical meaning and applications. The program will be drawn from lively research happening in prestigious centers around the world—including Princeton, Ecole Normale Supérieure, Yale, CNRS, Cambridge, Institut des Hautes Etudes Scientifiques—and will in turn shape the future of the field in the years to come.
