Poulomi Pal gives two moderated presentations at ESC2025 Research Gateway

Poulomi Pal presented two of her research outputs at the Research Gateway: In Empowered patients, healthier hearts: a new approach to cardiology chaired by Gayle Campbell and Jeroen M Hendriks, Poulomi spoke on 3-way music-based hypertension diagnosis. In Data-driven insights: advancing cardiovascular care with big data chaired by Nathalie Conrad and Kiril M Stoyanov, Poulomi presented sex-based differences in cardiovascular response to music.

Hypertension diagnosis often misses important subtypes like isolated systolic (ISH) and isolated diastolic (IDH) hypertension. This study tested whether listening to music could improve AI-based classification of these conditions using ECG signals. “Music based isolated systolic and diastolic hypertension detection with ECG spectrograms using Explainable AI technique Grad-CAM” showed how listening to music enhances cardiovascular signal clarity for AI, potentially offering a novel way to improve hypertension screening and diagnosis. With music, classification accuracy reached 81%, an improvement from 74% during silence.

Music can modulate heart and blood pressure activity, but little is known about the response difference between men and women. In this study, 52 participants (26 women, 26 men) listened to fast/slow and loud/soft versions of classical piano music while ECG and blood pressure were recorded. “Sex-dependent cardiovascular variations in response to basic music features” showed how the cardiovascular system reacts differently to music depending on sex, highlighting the need to consider sex differences when developing music-based therapies for heart health.
