On 10 May 2024, Elaine Chew was an Interviewee/Scientist, a subject for the Interview Skills Workshop with Alok Jha, Science and Technology Editor of The Economist, held at the Jean Hanson Room in the Henriette Raphaelle Building at Guys Campus. The workshop was organised by the Association of British Science Writers and facilitated by ABSW Vice-Chair Alex O’Brien.
Zainab Hussain was a ScienceWrite Alum who attended the workshop and spoke to Elaine, subsequently taking up Elaine’s offer to visit the Music Theranostics Laboratory with her colleague Sophie on 6 June 2024. Zainab later pitched the story to the Royal Society, for their Reclaiming Narratives blog series which highlights the lives and achievements of extraordinary scientists from minority groups.
In the pitch, Zainab mentioned Elaine’s cardiac arrhythmia leading to her decision to pursue research on the heart, and the Royal Society Blog offered to also run the piece as part of the Celebrating Scientists with Disabilities series for International Day of People with Disabilities on 3 December 2025.
